"The Vision for The ShePeople's came to me over the past few years as I have traveled and sung across the U.S and worldwide. I have met a number of female artists who share a similar need for safe spaces to present and perform at, as well as access to resources and artist development.
When I was a child, my father would say, 'Valerie, you’re a dreamer.' I would get mad at him for saying this, because I interpreted the statement as sarcasm. Today, however, I know that being a dreamer is a part of my truth. Dreams are deep thoughts. Thoughts are things, and if they are fostered in open, non-judgmental atmospheres, dreams can help to create positive change in the community.
In my dream of The ShePeople’s, I envisioned a place where women of all cultures and ages meet up to express their passions, discuss life, and develop unique concepts.
Currently, we have a monthly showcase. In the future, I hope we go as far as to have an annual retreat for those interested in artist development and residency."
Soon to come:
• SheED: a workshop series for the beginning and professional artists working toward sustainable development.
• The SheRetreat: a retreat supporting artist development, effective presentation and community & self awareness.
• SheTravels: a residency program geared towards the traveling artist wanting to explore her work abroad.
